Yesterday this little guy fell out one of the big pine trees by our house. The kids all felt bad and wanted me to bring him in the house so we could better take care of him. We decided against it for obvious reasons ie; the momma wouldn't take it back after being handled by humans and you never know if he might have a little thing called the bird flu.
I did let Ally dig up some worms to feed him though. She dug up about eight or ten and put them on the ground in front of the baby owl, and you know that little guy ate them all.
She had to be careful though because everytime we got too near the baby we would hear a "Hoo Hoo" from the tree above. We thought this little guy was all alone until we found his mother staring at us with her big owl eyes watching the whole scene. I noticed yesterday that although the magpies and robins were curious about the baby, they wouldn't venture too near......I think momma had something to do with it! Then this morning we went outside and saw that his Momma was sitting on the ground with her wings wrapped around her baby protecting him from the wind and the cold. She has also brought him a mouse to snack on while he sits on the ground. We are still trying to figure out how we might put him back in the nest, but for now, the mother is doing a good job taking care of her young.
I can so relate, although sometimes, my wings just don't feel wide enough.
